Don’t battle acne alone. Our dermatologist can help you win that fight.

Acne is one of the most common skin problems that afflict both men and women. Of course, maybe you thought that once your teen years were over that you would have clear skin. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way. No matter if you are a teen or an adult who is finding it difficult to get their acne symptoms under control, our La Porte and Valparaiso, IN, dermatologist, Dr. William Applegarth, can help you find the right solution to reduce breakouts.

Caring for Your Skin at Home

The very first thing most people do is turn to at-home skin care products to help tackle their acne. Those with mild symptoms may find that products tailored to treat acne-prone skin (products that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide) are all they need to get their breakouts under control.

It’s important that you are also gentle when it comes to caring for your skin, particularly if you are someone who is prone to acne. Being too aggressive when you wash your face can just make your symptoms worse.

When to See a Doctor

There comes a time in which you have to admit that what you’ve tried just hasn’t worked and that it’s time to turn to a skin doctor in La Porte and Valparaiso who can provide you with a more effective treatment plan. If your acne is severe or if it has stopped responding to over-the-counter acne treatments, it’s time to turn to us for an evaluation.

There are many treatment options for tackling your acne, but first we need to figure out what’s causing your acne. Often during adolescence, hormones are responsible for your teen’s acne. In this case, young women may be prescribed an oral contraceptive known to treat acne.

Other acne treatments include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Retinoid
  • Topical creams with a stronger concentration of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid
  • Laser therapy
  • Chemical peels (also great for reducing the appearance of superficial acne scars)
  • Extractions

Applegarth Dermatology offers two convenient locations in Valparaiso and LaPorte, IN, to serve you better. No matter whether you want to chat about your acne treatment options or you want to find out how we can fresh your appearance and take years off your face, call our office today.
